“Well, it might take a bit, but it’s good to have you back,” I said to the spirit mouse. “Thanks for keeping Vio in one piece… mostly.”

I turned to find her standing on top of the dead ceratisi.

“Yo, chat. Someone grab a screenshot!” She rested a boot on the grip of her sword, protruding from the snake’s belly, then curled both arms up and flexed. Her face was beaten to a pulp, all bruises and black eyes, and blood matted her hair to her forehead, but she smiled wide anyway, victorious.

“A noble beast,” Ebuva said, stepping up beside me.

“Vio?” I laughed. “That’s hardly the word I’d—oh, you mean the snake.”

“Ceratisi.” He was staring at its corpse, and was that… sadness in his eyes?

“It’d have been a lot more noble if it hadn’t tried to kill us all.”

“Ceratisi does what ceratisi does,” he said with a shrug.

“Yeah, well, next time, you can fight it.” I clapped him on the shoulder. “So, about our quest…”
